Research & Conservation

in Madagascar

ICTE Facilitated Research at Centre ValBio Research Station

The research program of ICTE is broad and ambitious in scope. Most of the research in which we are involved contributes to the understanding of the ecology of tropical rainforests in Madagascar with implications for rainforest conservation througout the world. The work of the hundreds of research scientists that we support provides needed information on the endangered biodiversity of Madagascar. Specific projects include plant and animal systematics, senescence in lemurs and its implications for human aging, focal studies of important and at-risk species, and community-level studies. Researchers working at the Centre ValBio focus on issues such as stream ecosystem function, leaf litter community dynamics, seed-dispersal, lemur demography, pollination, and predation studies in birds, primates, and other mammals. Duration of research ranges from brief studies by students attending field courses, to medium-length studies conducted by Ph.D. students and visiting professors, through to long-term research and monitoring projects.
