Identification

This is one of the largest of the tuft-tailed rats. It's upperparts are dark greyish-brown with the sides lighter than the back, underparts are light grey, there is no abrupt line of transition between the two. The feet are whitish. The tail is long and thin with a thick bushy white tuft at the end. (Garbutt, 1999)

They forage on the ground and will sometimes climb.

Behavior

They have been found in breeding condition in November-December. Litter sizes of 2 and 3 have been reported.
